It seems like every year, I make it to less and less of the blockbuster movies. We are now eight and a half months into 2009 and here is the complete list of movies that I’ve seen in the theaters:
Transformers 2
Harry Potter 6
No, that isn’t a partial list. That’s the complete list. I’ll make it to a few more movies, this year. There’s a lot of stuff I’m excited to see. Being married, I’ve noticed that Sara and I don’t make it to many movies because there are a very small amount of movies that we both are excited to see. It’s not a knock on my wife, but we’ve got different taste in movies. I can try to drag her to a random action flick, but chances are she won’t like it which makes it seem like a waste of both of our time. Likewise, she could try to drag me to the latest chick flick such as “I Love You But He’s Not Into You Although It’s Complicated Because The One You Loved Is Going to Tragically Die”
Anyway, high definition movies, surround sound, and gigantic televisions have made the movie-going experience almost irrelevant for me. I have to drive to Fargo if I wanted to check out a movie in a theater with awesome surround sound, stadium seating, and giant screens. I’d also have to go to Fargo or possibly even the Twin Cities to see a lot of the niche movies (documentaries, indie films, small-budget films, etc) that I’m into. Right now, admission is $8.75 (and rising) at the Fargo Theaters. I know that’s cheap compared to some parts of the country. So basically, if I want to bring Sara to a movie that I’m really excited to see, I’ve got to shell out $11 in gas and $18 in tickets. This isn’t counting 4 hours just to go to a movie and drive there and back. We’re also looking at the cost of going out to dinner more than likely. We’re talking about $50 once dinner is figured in.
Or… I can do the best I can to avoid spoilers for 4-5 months and pick up a Blu-Ray for sale somewhere between $15-20. If it’s a movie that Sara doesn’t want to watch, it’s no biggie because I can check it out some night when she’s working late or out with the girls.
Who else is with me in proclaiming theaters a thing of the past?
Come back tomorrow where I’ll have my list of movies that look like they’ll be worth checking out (on dvd or Blu-Ray, of course) just judging by trailers.
