Big Fan - I doubt this will go down as a “great film”, but it reminds me a ton of “The Fan” which is a horrible, but surprisingly re-watchable film. I really like Patton Oswald and I’m interested in how they go about this flick. Media coverage, especially with sports talk radio and the blogosphere, has gone crazy in the past ten years, so they could make a much more real and relevant movie than they could in 1996. If Patton Oswald somehow is disguised as the head referee at the end of the movie, though, I’ll eat my hat.
Broken Embraces - Here’s to guessing this movie doesn’t make it the local theater here in Perham. I’ve seen Pedro Almodovar’s last 5 films. Three of them have been great – Live Flesh, All About My Mother, and Talk to Her – although the last two disappointed a bit. His movies are often quick quirky and humorous, but not for everyone.
The Lovely Bones - This movie is going to either really suck or really be awesome. I’m pretty sure this winds up as a “2 stars out of 4” on your HBO guide sometime, but there’s a small chance they execute here, right?
Ong Bak 2 - If you are at all a fan of martial arts movies and you haven’t seen the original Ong Bak, I feel bad for you. Although I like to consider Anderson Silva the original Muay Thair warrior, Tony Jai does a heck of a job. With some of these foreign martial arts movies, you’ve got to throw the brain in the trash for two hours and just enjoy. Anything that will be in this movie will be far more realistic than hopping in a freezer to protect yourself from a nuclear bomb a la the last Indiana Jones, though.
Extract - unless all of the best parts of the movie are in the trailer (entirely possible), this looks to be worth watching. When you are talking the guy behind Office Space (Mike Judge), the main character on Arrested Development (Jason Bateman) and the funniest person on SNL last year (Kristen Wiig), you’ve got some real comedic potential.
A Serious Man - I’m excited to see just about any movie released by the Coen Brothers. As much as I liked No Country For Old Men, though, it almost doesn’t get any better than a Coen Brothers dark comedy. Add in the fact that it was filmed in Minnesota and you’ve got yourself a movie I’ve got to see.
Sherlock Holmes - This looks like it could be the one big budget movie that’s worth seeing this year. Guy Ritchie has been pretty hit or miss lately although if he and Robert Downey Jr are both “on”, this could be great.
Brothers - Another on the list of movies that could be great or completely unwatchable. I like the cast and I like director Jim Sheridan’s resume for the most part. Although as Pearl Harbor proved, the military and a love triangle isn’t always a recipe for success.
It Might Get Loud - Finally, here’s a movie that has literally zero chance of sucking. It features The Edge, Jimmy Page, and Jack White all talking about the guitar. If you’re at all a rock music fan, you absolutely can’t miss this. Plus, since I’m going to see U2 in concert in September, this movie has much more relevance with me than it even normally would.
