Number 10 Rounders
How can you not like this flick? A dramatic friend movie with a bunch of twists and turns. I think the moral issue that makes me the most interested in this movie is the moral dilemma facing Mike (Matt Damon) about whether he wants to take the road that everyone says he should take (law school) or the road that is his true passion (poker). John Malkovich, Edward Norton, John Turturro, and Famke Janssen all are wonderful in their roles. Also Recommended Viewing: Good Will Hunting, Poolhall Junkies, On the Waterfront
Number 9 Goodfellas
This could easily be in the top 5. Who knows... someday with the ever shuffling of movies, it very well might be. If you haven't seen Goodfellas, you don't even know what you're missing. Part coming of age movie, part mob movie, in my opinion, this is the finest example of why Marty Scorsese is one of the most talented directors ever. The fact that he has five movies on my top 100 alone is another. Anyways, not that it matters, but this is a true story and quite possibly the biggest snub in Oscar history. Dances With Wolves better than this? I think not! Also Recommended Viewing: Heat, The Godfather, Casino
Number 8 Pulp Fiction
Everything about this movies just says "cool." Samuel L = cool. John Travolta, Bruce Willis, Uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel = cool. I love the fact that the first time you watch this movie, you have no clue what's going on until it all comes together. The second I finished watching it (and it's a long flick), I wanted to go back and watch it again. This was the first Tarantino movie that I'd ever seen and I promise you that I won't miss anything he ever releases. Possibly the best thing about this movie is the fact that it is so different and so unique. It's a style that's often imitated, but never done as good as it is here. Also Recommended Viewing: Resevoir Dogs, Donnie Darko, Run Lola Run
Number 7 The Shawshank Redemption
One reason that this is a favorite is a bit of a personal reason... it was almost the last movie I ever watched! Yes, as a matter of fact, I watched this movie for the second time the day before I "died." As far as the movie goes, it's possibly one of the most heartwarming movies ever. The ending is just classic although I don't think they need to be giving it away on the cover art. Morgan Freeman & Tim Robbins both absolutely carry this movie. The goal of every single movie is to make you "feel" and this movie accomplishes that better than almost any other movie I've ever seen. Also Recommended Viewing: The Green Mile, Forrest Gump, Cast Away
Number 6 Lord of the Rings trilogy
The first movie, believe it or not was not liked by a certain someone (okay, it was me!) the first time I ever saw it. For some reason, I decided to buy the DVD anyways and I fell in love. Then I saw the Two Towers for the first time and my love for the series just escalated. Return of the King just solidified this movies slot in my top 10 list. I think it's my favorite of the three. I'm not old enough to have seen any of the "good" movie franchises (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Godfather) come out in theaters, so this experience is something new to me. Also Recommended Viewing: Braveheart, Lawrence of Arabia, Star Wars
Number 5 Braveheart
Before I saw this movie, I honestly thought Mel Gibson kinda sucked. This movie absolutely rules, though. I would say this movie directly or indirectly has influence almost every big budget epic movie that's come out since then. Tell me the scenes in Gladiator, the Patriot, Lord of the Rings, ect. don't remind you a whole lot of this movie, especially as far as the action and computer enhancements are concerned. It's one thing to be a good action movie, but the drama in this flick just brings it to THE next level. Also Recommended Viewing: Gladiator, Last of the Mohicans, Lord of the Rings
Number 4 Good Will Hunting
Another feel good movie. I honestly think this movie touches me just because the characters in this movie are so easy to relate to. I don't think many people have honestly not felt like the odds were stocked against them at one time or another. At the same time, I can relate to Affleck because I've always hoped for my friends to do bigger and better things than go out and get drunk with "the boys" every night. Minnie Driver's character... easy to relate to! Who hasn't fallen in love with someone who didn't love them back in the same way. How about the doctor, Robin Williams? Yup, I can relate to him as well (who knew!) I mean, who hasn't struggled over a loss of a loved one? All in all it's a great movie and it's very well written, which is why they won the Oscar. Also Recommended Viewing: Rounders, Jerry Maguire, Finding Forrester
Number 3 Swingers
Speaking of good writing and good characters, I think Trent from Swingers may be my favorite movie character of all time. Vince Vaughn is an absolute genious. Nobody can honestly play the obnoxious guy like Vince Vaughn. There are a couple scenes in this movie that are some of the funniest ever put on film. This is like the epitome of a what a great indie movie should be. Even though you can tell it was made for nothing, the writing and the characters make it every bit as good or better as a movie with 10 or even 100 times the budget. It seems like a movie about me and my friends... especially the part where they are playing Sega in the apartment. Also Recommended Viewing: Made, Office Space, Old School
Number 2 Scarface
This movie has a special place in my heart... haha. Everytime I start watching this flick, I spend the next week talking like "Tony Montana meng"... This is just a great story. I guy who has nothing and builds an empire. Then, once he has everything, he just blows it and winds up with nothing. Beautiful! Plus Al Pacino plays possibly the coolest character in movie history. How can you not like Tony? Well, besides the fact that he killed his best friend and is in love with his sister. Still, what's not to love! Just as a sidenote, this the former number one. Also Recommended Viewing: Carlito's Way, Fight Club, Unforgiven
Number 1 Godfather I & II
Probably the ultimate guy movie. I don't know if I like number 1 or number 2 better, but they both are great and made even better by reading the book. This is possibly my favorite cast in a movie. Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan & Robert DeNiro are all absolutely awesome here. The funny thing is, my parents have never seen this movie... they actually were alive when it came out in theaters and yet they've never seen it. Their loss, I guess. Also Recommended Viewing: Goodfellas, Road to Perdition, Donnie Brasco
