Fargo
When this first came out, I absolutely hated it because all I heard was the way they talked and how it seemed to make fun of Minnesota. Once I got by that, I realized that this film is truly a gem. Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, and Steve Buscemi all give great performances here. This is the first Coen film that I've seen and I can assure you it won't be the last.

A Bronx Tale
A great movie about the fight for a son between a father (DeNiro) and a local crimelord (Palminteri). "C" grows up not really knowing whether he should idolize his blue collar working dad or the man he's fascinated with - Sonny. A great movie that kinda brings in the feeling of the 50's. Plus, it's one of the better coming of age movies that you'll ever see.

Whale Rider
A slow movie, but beautifully constructed movie about a girl who wants to be accepted by her family, but because she is a girl, she is prohibited from doing certain things. A very interesting take on the Maori culture. It's a lot like a Disney movie, like maybe Pocohantas, but it takes it to the next step (and loses the cheesiness in the process).

Trainspotting
To call this a drug movie would be to do it a supreme injustice. It's much more a movie about Rent Boy, who used to be hooked on drugs but is trying to get out. He moves to a new town and tries to start a new life, but unfortunately his friends follow him. When his friends follow him, they also bring trouble.

Unforgiven
This has been called the most realistic western ever. While I don't know if it's true or not, I can say for certain that I consider myself someone who definitely wouldn't be considered a fan of westerns in general, but I just loved this flick. Clint Eastwood is great as Bill Munny, a man who reluctantly takes on last job to make some money to support his children.

Pleasantville
A look at what life would be like if it was exactly like a 50's television show like Leave It To Beaver. A very interesting take on how modern day kids would influence and change the course of the town. Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon and especially Jeff Daniels are great in this highly underrated flick.

Finding Forrester
A young black writing prodigy befriends a classic write who has since gone into hiding. It doesn't seem plausible, but in the movie it just works. Directed by Gus Van Sant who also did Good Will Hunting, this movie is very inspiring. Not your average high school movie, that's for sure.

Clerks
The first of the New Jersey trilogy, Clerks is the most clever yet at the same time irrelevant movie of Kevin Smith's brief career. The dialogue is intelligent and the situations are something that most people can relate to. Unless you were born into a silver spoon family, you probably at one time or another had a terrible job... I've had my share (and probably yours, too).

Ghostbusters
When I was a youngster, I didn't really even realize this movie was funny. As I've grown, I started to realize this movie was and is absolutely hilarious. Some of the funniest work of some of the funniest comedians (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harlod Ramis in particular) of the 80s. Plus, it's a cool enough story that makes it more than watchable. I love the MST3K-style commentary on the DVD as well.

Monster
Watching how good of an acting job Charlize Theron does in this movie is scary enough until you see some real life footage of Aileeen and you realize that Theron did something amazing. She deserved the Oscar alone just for the fact that she transformed from one of the most beautiful women alive to one of the most hideous in both mind and body. Christina Ricci's performance is nothing to ignore either.
